Homeowners are being excluded from the best mortgage deals because they do not bank with the right lender, an investigation by Times Money has found. Banks and building societies are reserving home loans for selected customers or secretly toughening up affordability criteria.

David Hollingworth, of London & Country Mortgages, the broker, says: “There are far more niche deals now as lenders decide to target a few customers rather than open up new deals to the whole market — and be swamped with applications.
