Barclays has provoked anger by increasing overdraft rates for two million current account customers, just two days after the banking group recorded bumper pre-tax profits of £11.6bn for 2009.

A fifth of Barclays current account customers will see charges for going into the red increase by up to 5 percentage points from the end of April. Many savers will find the news hard to swallow following reports that Barclays paid £2.7billion in bonuses to its staff last year, £1.5billion of which was in cash.
